The DVD resource Kid’s Guide to Climate Change aims to educate young people about climate change in a way which will bring about positive change. This promotional DVD was completed thanks to the support of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF – Australia) and Wollongong City Council’s Environment Fund.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, in Johannesburg, South Africa, a decision was made that views of children should be incorporated in decisions regarding environment. As climate change becomes a growing concern in Australia, we now see it as crucial that young people know what climate change is, how it can affect their futures, and what role they can play in making a difference.

Kid’s Guide to Climate Change is an initiative created by Parrys Raines, a local Illawarra 12 year old girl concerned about her generation not being well informed about climate change. Parrys decided to make this documentary because she believes there is little information in a simple format that educates children about climate change with explanations of what children can do in their everyday lives that can make a difference. She also believes that by producing a DVD, the information can be distributed to a large population within the community. After conducting research (by interviewing children of various ages) Parrys found that children wanted to do things to help the environment but were not sure what they could do. As Youth Ambassador for WWF-Australia (since 2007), Parrys is a passionate and committed young environmentalist. Most recently, with the support of Sea World and WWF, she completed a documentary on the plight of polar bears and she was nominated for Young Citizen of the Year. Parrys will also represent Australia at the United Nations Environment Program for Youth in Norway, June 2008. There will be 1000 delegates aged 10-14 years attending. Parrys is one of 20 people who have been selected to speak at the conference and she is an inspiration to say the least.

Kid’s Guide to Climate Change looks to raise awareness around the positive things young people can do to help locally, it does not hope to create distress for young people. Our production team is committed to the philosophy that one of the most effective ways to communicate with young people is through young people. Targeted at 6-16 year olds, Kid’s Guide to Climate Change will include engaging material written by young people and will be presented in a relevant, entertaining and inspiring way. Our aim is to get one copy to each school in NSW and then the rest of Australia.

Parrys recently received letters of support from MP Peter Garrett, Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson and Australia’s Ambassador to the UN, Robert Hill.
